生于渥太华，早期在伦敦从事电视及广告的剪辑工作，1971年因替影片《大丈夫》Straw Dogs (1971)担任剪辑而涉足影坛。之后陆续剪辑了不少影片等。1980年开始转行做导演，首部作品为犯罪恐怖片《死亡列车》（恐怖列车），成绩并无出色。1982年编剧的动作片《48小时》，以及次年导演的战争片《危城十日》，让他声名渐扬。之后也导演了一些电视影片，直到1997年导演了007系列的《明日帝国》，才声誉大振，成为知名大导。2000年的《第六日》，更增加了他的国际知名度。
